Seeing the existing data in an index pattern

Kibana requires an index pattern to access the Elasticsearch data that you want to explore. An index pattern selects the data to use and allows you to define properties of the fields. An index pattern can point to a specific index, for example, your log data from yesterday, or all indices that contain your data.

To see the existing data in an index pattern all in one area, you can do this in two ways: 

1. Click on the "Management" icon at the bottom of the sidebar. You can see all the fields within the specified index pattern you click on.

2. To see a more detailed view of data in an index pattern, download the Elasticsearch Head extension on Chrome. It will allow you to look at the indices and even view each document
